Abstract

When flabby materials such as rubber are machined at normal temps. e.g. the grinding of a printing cylinder the operation is slow and hazardous because the workpiece heats up, gives off an offensive smell, clogs up the grinding wheel and causes it to splinter. This can be overcome and machine speeded up by freezing the workpiece with a spray of cryogenic fluid such as liquid nitrogen. The fluid is vaporised just before it meets the workpiece by being passed through an evaporator which receives radiant and convected heat, pref. from being in close proximity to the workpiece upstream from the machining zone. The vapour spray is much more effective than a liquid, when many droplets bounce off with little cooling effect.
