Abstract

Separation of a component of a gas mixtures that component being more soluble in a liquid than another component of the gas mixture) is effected by contacting the gas mixture commingled with at least 13.5% of the amt. of the vapour of said liquid required to saturated the gas mixture in a separation zone with a semi-permeable membrane which has the capacity to imbibe the liquid. The gas mixture on the downstream side on the membrane is enriched in the more soluble component. The vapour of the liquid increases the selectivity of the membrane for the more soluble component e.g. by a factor of from 2 to 5. The mixture may be natural gas, a hydrocarbon mixture e.g. C2H4 and CH4, A H2/CO2 mixture, a mixture of oxygen-contg. organic components or a mixture of NH3, H2 and N2 obtained in the synthesis of NH3. The liquid, the vapour of which is commingled with the gas mixture, is pref. water. Suitable hydrophilic membranes are of cellulose acetate and polyethylene terephthalate.
