Abstract

1299883 Separating gas mixtures by diffusion UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 June 1970 [17 March 1969] 13988/69 Heading B1L A gas mixture to be separated by diffusion, e.g. North Sea natural gas comprising CH 4 and He, is passed by line 1 to tubular permeation membrane 3 e.g. of polycarbonate, located in compartment 2. As pressure balancing fluid, gaseous SF 6 is circulated continuously through compartment 2 and sweeps permeated mixture by lines 4 and 7 to separator 8. The permeater then passes to second stage diffuser 11 while the balancing fluid is recirculated by lines 9. The non-permeating effluent from the second and subsequent stages is returned by line 12 to feed line 1.
