Abstract
A selectively permeable gas is separated from a gas mixture by supplying the mixture axially to the outsides of a plurality of semi-permeable hollow fiber membranes, the selectively permeable gas being concentrated in the bores of such membranes, a gas mixture diminished in such selectively permeable gas being withdrawn as permeant from the outer surfaces of such membranes, and the composition of such permeant gas stream being predominantly controlled by adjusting the differential in pressure between the feed gas mixture and the permeated stream. A gas mixture suitable for use as an OXO alcohol synthesis gas may be produced from a feed gas mixture comprising at least hydrogen and carbon monoxide by such a membrane separation after removal of carbon dioxide by absorption.
