Abstract

Graft copolymer dispersion contains in the dispersed phase a graft copolymer having (I) a skeleton segment consisting of an acrylic, alkyd, urethane, epoxy or epoxy ester resin, 1-20% wt. of this segment being composed of monomer units with a high polaity, and this segment having a solubility parameter of 7-12, and (II) a graft polymer segment formed from butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, this segment having a solubility parameter of 6.8-8.8. The values of the solubility parameters of segments (I) and (II) differ by 0.2-2.5 units, and the copolymer is dispersed in a continuous phase of lower polarity having a solubility of 6.8-8.8. The graft copolymer forms stable dispersions in solvents and solvent mixtures including plasticisers, as long as the given solubility parameters are maintained. Esp. useful as paints for automobiles.
