Abstract
A floating offshore well drilling or production platform has a deck supported at the upper ends of three or more vertical floats whose lower ends are connected by nominally vertical ties to anchor points on the sea bed. Each float has a slender upper portion and an enlarged lower portion, and the notional annular volume internally of the lower portion around the projection of the upper portion constitutes from 40 to 60% of the total displacement below the still-water line. The annular volume lies below the trough of the design wave to minimise forces exerted by wave action.
