Abstract

Insecticidal compositions active against insects and larvae consists of a carrier and 1-substd. -phenyl-4,4,4-trifluorobutene-1,3-dione of general formula: R.CO.CH2.CO.CF3 (where R = PH with at least one substituent viz. Hal, NO2 or alkoxy. Specifically the R substituents are: 3,4,5-tri-Cl, 4-NO2, 4-MeO, 4-buO, 3,4-diBr, 3,4-diCl, 2,5-diCl or Br or F. Preparation is by reaction of a substd. acetophenone with a lower alkyl or aralkyl ester of trifluoracetic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst e.g. alkali alcoholates in an inert solvent.
