Abstract
Method for activating a mass of hydrocracking catalyst contg. at least one metallic component in an oxidised form comprises (a) contacting the catalyst mass in a reaction zone with hydrogen at a temp. from -18 degrees C to 177 degrees C and at a pressure greater tahn 6.8 atmospheres gauge; (b) during the contacting introducing into reaction zone a hydrocarbon feed stock and a sulphur cpd selected from hydrogen sulphide alkyl mercaptans and alkyl sulphides, the hydrocarbon feed stock being maintained in the liquid phase; (c) raising the temp. of the catalyst mass to 177-260 degrees C while maintaining the pressure in the reaction zone within the range of 34-204 atmos. gauge (d) maintaining the catalyst mass at the temp. and pressure for a sufficient time to effect reduction and sulphiding of a major portion of the metallic component while continuing to maintain a substantial portion of the hydrocarbon feed stock in the liquid phase; (e) increasing the temp. of the catalyst mass to a temp. less than 454 degrees C and (f) effecting hydrocracking of the hydrocarbon feed stock.
