Abstract
D2 is produced by isotope exchange between amines and H2 by counter-current contact of gas mixture, consisting of N2 and H2 forming NH3 synthesis gas in part of way and of gaseous NH3 in another part, and liquid amine containing catalyst and opt. auxiliary in soln. Countercurrent contact takes place in 3 consecutive exchange columns T1, T2 and T3 at same temp. as follows: (a) liquid amine passes in closed cycle through T1 and T2 where it is enriched in D2 and then T3 where D2 content is reduced, (b) gas mixture passes through T3 where it is enriched in D2 then through T2 and T1 where D2 content is reduced (c) N2 + 3H2 mixture with natural isotope composition enters cycle between T2 and T1 and passes to NH3 synthesis plant after leaving T1 (d) part of NH3 with reduced D2 content leaving synthesis plant is vapourised and introduced into T3 (e) D2 enriched NH3 is removed at outlet of T3 (f) remaining enriched NH3 is cracked and resultant N2 + 3H2 mixture is introduced into T2 (g) amine with reduced D2 content and charged with NH3 is discharged from T3 and distilled, giving NH3 which is vapourised and recycled to T3 whilst amine is recycled.
