Abstract

Covers for open sided packages or baskets used for perishable foodstuffs etc are made from a homogeneous (plastic) film cut in patterns, to provide slotted zones to form windows or tear-open zones between zones of unbroken material when stretched laterally. The slits may be created in staggered or parallel rows using multi-knife rollers to cut tubular film or by use of suitable reciprocating die face cutters during extrusion of film. Unitary construction is simpler and stronger than composites made of alternate panels of netting and film or paper. The size of the openings in one pattern of slit film can be adapted for holding articles of various sizes.
