Abstract

Vinyl chloride is (co)polymerised in aqs. emulsion in the presence of a redox system consisting of a mineral per salt and a reducing cpd., the monomers being well dispersed in the aqs. medium, >=1 of the components of the redox system being introduced continuously throughout polymerisation, and polymerisation being effected at average or low temp. (Co)polymerisation is effected at a relatively low temp., at relatively high rate e.g. 30% conversion per hr. with low crust formation. The PVC latex contains particles with an av. dia. 0.1 mu., to ca. 50 mu, depending on the reaction conditions. The PVC is suitable for the prodn. of films, profiles and fibres.
