Abstract

Undrawn plastic films having a rough or granular structure are formed by partially fusing together granular plastic materials, placing them between textiles and plane surfaces and applying heat and pressure. The thickness of the films may vary from a fraction of mm. to several mm. The film may be formed by applying a powdered thermoplastic to a non-adhesive substrate e.g. of PTFE by spraying or with a scraper blade. The layer is then sintered to form a film, cooled and then reeled. The surfaces may be smooth, rough or perforated. Examples of suitable materials are polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers or polyamides. Pressure is pref. applied with the film preheated to 140 degrees - 190 degrees C. Adhesion is better than with drawn thermoplastic films and the process of application simpler.
