Abstract
In a valve to be buried, protected from corrosion by an electrical and chemical insulating layer and consisting of a valve body, a remote control shaft, and pipe joints, the valve body and part of the pipe joints are embedded in a mass of insulating water-resistant material which is itself protected at the base and on the walls by an adhesive envelope and the remote control shaft is embedded in flexible water-resistant mastic contained within an enclosure. The insulating water-resistant material may be of tar or pitch or a blend of tar with epoxide resin. Glass fibre reinforced resins may also be used. For the adhesive envelope a material such as tarred paper coated with Al is useful. The control shaft may be enclosed in a plastic tube or two tubes sliding within one another or by an accordeon sleeve of PTFE. The treatment gives satisfactory protection against corrosion for valves used in underground conduits.
