Abstract

Bonded lacquer coatings are formed on substrates by applying a film of a soln. of 20-80 pts. wt. vinyl monomer and 80-20 pts. wt. alpha,beta-alkenically unsatd. acrylic/siloxane resin, and crosslinking by ionising radiation. The acrylic/siloxane resin is prepd. by reacting 1 mole of a siloxane with >=2 hydroxyl and/or alkoxy groups per molecule, with (I) 0.5-1.5 moles of a vinyl copolymer derived from a major proportion of a C5-12 monohydroxyacrylate obtained from (meth) acrylic acid and a C2-8 diol, this copolymer having 0.2-2 OH groups per 1000 units of mol. wt., and (II) a C5-12 monohydroxyacrylate obtained from (meth) acrylic acid and a c2-8 diol. Coatings having excellent adhesion, good flexibility and weather resistance are obtained on wood, glass, metals, polymers and natural or synthetic fibres.
