Abstract

The plant comprises a hopper, to receive the waste, with a blade conveyor at its base. The outlet of the hopper feeds a conveyor through an extractor grinder which consists of two rollers fitted with interlocking rings with notched teeth on their peripheries. The pre-ground waste fall on a magnetic drum which removes metallic materials, such as tin cans. Another conveyor transports the waste to the principal disintegrator which is of the hammer type. The disintegrated waste is then introduced into a rotating cylinder; this turns at 1 rmp. and the waste undergoes aerobic fermentation for a period of several days. The plant is simple and low in cost. After leaving the cylinder slow fermentation in a heap for one month is sufficient to produce a compost of the same quality as that obtained by direct fermentation in bulk after three months.
