Abstract

Methylthiophosphonic acid dichloride, CH3PSCl2, is prepd. by the progressive reaction of S with a mixture of methyldichlorophosphine (I) and methylthiophosphonic acid dichloride (II) contg. at least 75% wt. (II), in presence of a Lewis acid at a minimum temperature equal to the melting point of S to achieve a liquid phase reaction. The presence of (II) in the initial reaction mixture enables the reaction to be carried out at elevated temps. thus eliminating prior art difficulties, e.g. slow reaction rate at low temperature in heterogenous phase and accumulation of S in the final product.
