Abstract

Derivs. are prepared by contacting a cyclohexenyl carboxylate at 70-200 degrees with a gas containing oxygen, the oxygenated cyclohexenyl compound may subsequently be dehydrogenated and hydrolysed to form an ester of a dihydroxybenzene or a dehydroxybenzene. The oxidation may take place in the presence of a catalyst e.g cobalt, vanadium and/or molybdenum, in an inert solvent such as benzene which forms an azeotrope with water cyclohexenyl acetate is a suitable starting material.
