Abstract

1,266,678. Acetic acid. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. 16 April, 1970 [1 May, 1969], No. 18103/70. Heading C2C. Acetic acid is prepared by the oxidation of butane at 66-177‹ C. with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of an inert reaction medium and a soluble cobalt compound as catalyst in an amount within the range of 0.4 to 25% by weight as cobalt based on the reaction medium. Cobalt compounds are listed and cobaltous or cobaltic acetate is preferred. A fatty acid (2-4 C) may be the inert medium and acetic acid is preferred. Conventional initiators such as an aldehyde, ketone, peroxide or ozone may be present.
