Abstract

The coating is such as to make the seed suitable for mechanical sowing. Protective layer consists of a brittle enveloping material which bursts with increasing pressure of swelling inside the protective envelope. When the seed is one which swells greatly, the coating pref. consists of a non-swelling material, esp. a dried mineral flour with the addition of a plastic (pref. a synthetic resin that loses its water-solubility after drying). When the seed is one which does not swell greatly, the coating pref. consists of 2 layers, the inner layer being a strongly swelling material (pref. milled organic material in admixture with a plastic) and the outer layer being a non-swelling material.
