Abstract

Oligomers of tetrafluoroethylene are prepared by reacting anhydrous tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of fluoride ions derived from potassium fluoride in an inert medium (I) containing quaternary ammonium (pref. tetra alkyl ammonium) chloride, bromide or iodide. (I) may be a polar solvent (dimethyl formamide etc.,) reaction temp. is 50-120 degrees C, and pressure is 7.03 28.12 kg/cm2. Method uses easily prepared catalysts. Products are used as oleophobic coatings for metal surfaces.
