Abstract

The membrane of the cathode which is permeable to oxygen but impermeable to sea water consists of a hydrophobic polymer such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyhexafluoropropylene, polychlortrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidenfluoride and copolymers of them. The electrochemically active catalyst on its side towards the electrolyte is a metal from group VIII or IB of the periodic table, mixed with one of the above polymers. The consumable anode is pref. zinc in the form of a grid coated with sponge metal.
