Abstract
The addition of 10-15% of hydrophobic material such as PTFE to the porous layer containing the catalyst on a fuel cell electrode prevents the penetration of the electrode by the electrolyte. This results in a cell characteristic in which the current density is relatively independent of gas pressure difference across the electrode. Thus the pressure of gas supplied may be reduced to just above atmospheric.
