Abstract

This process comprises chlorinating ethane, ethyl chloride or 1,1-dichloroethane in the liquid phase with chlorine in the presence of ethylene as a catalyst, at a temp. from 20 degrees C. t the b.pt. Polychlorinated ethane is preferably used as the liquid reaction medium. Pure HCl is obtained as a byproduct. Yields of e.g. 60% of methylchloroform (1,1,1-trichloroethane) are obtained.
