Abstract

Simultaneous biaxial orienting of extruded polypropylene lay-flat tubes. G1-. is effected by rapid cooling of the downwardly extruded tube to prevent excessive crystallisation of the tube and thereby improve the rate of biaxial orienting. Rapid cooling of the tube is effected by controlling the dia. of the tube using on the one hand an inner presser frame formed by a diameter control device provided at its upper end with outlets for the cooling liquid and at its lower end with a cylindrical member whose outer surface is provided with helical grooves for guiding of the inner liquid discharged through the outlets, and on the other hand, an external cooling bath which surrounds the inner presser frame projecting through the base of the cooling bath. Annular space between the bath and the presser frame is closed by an elastomeric ring such that egress of the outer liquid is prevented and the tube is cooled rapidly by direct contacting of the inner and outer walls of the tube with the cooling liquids.
