Abstract

Thermoplastic film stretching equipment in which one or more stations with widely separated draw rolls are preceded with one or more stations with closely spaced (1 cm.) draw rolls. The orientation characteristics of the stretched sheet can be varied in a controlled manner by adjusting the relative degree of drawing produced in turn in the short gap and long gap stations. Esp. for producing oriented olefin polymer or copolymer films. Drawing in the short gap stations reduces thickness in preference to sheet width, and produces tough, extensible, split resilient film. Drawing in long gap stations results in preferential width reduction to produce strong but less extensible and laterally more brittle films than short drawn films. The equipment described allows either set of characteristics to be developed in turn to a balanced extent at throughputs up to 200 m/min.
