Abstract
Branched aliphatic polycarbonates are prepared by re-esterification of diaryl carbonates with tri- and tetra-functional hydroxy compounds of the general formula R-C(CH2OH)3, where R is H, C1-5 alkyl or CH2OH. The re-esterification is carried out without a catalyst at 100-200 deg.C., and the reactants are not used in equivalent amounts. The polycarbonates are new compounds. They have a molecular weight below 5000, preferably below 2000. They vary from viscous oils to resinous or glassy materials. They can be used as thickeners for organic solutions or printing pastes or as a basis for ointments; they are intermediates for cross-linking agents for acrylic resin lacquers.
