Abstract
A hollow sphere, with porous walls, is used as an exothermic feed head in metal casting, allowing min. waste of metal and avoidance of voids in the main casting. Feed head is formed by reaction of outer layers of a mixture in a spherical, hot mould, and removal of unreacted inner part of contents. Mixture may comprise silica sand, 100 kg.; resins, 2-21 kg., mineral black, 1-15 kg., exothermic mixture of Fe2O3 and Mg, 2-50 kg.; release agent, calcium stearate, 10-100 g. per kg. resin; catalyst, 350-450 g. of soln. of hexamethylene tetramine per kg. resin. Reaction to form feed head shell occurs in mould preheated to 150-450 degrees C., and may be completed by introducing hot air to residual shell of partly cured resin, etc., mixture. Shell is permeable to air.
