Abstract
Cd/Ag alloy strip is first partially oxidised, then thermally bonded to a metal of high electrical and thermal conductivity and finally fully oxidised. The conditions for pre-oxidisation are 15-20 mins. at 800-850 degrees C, for thermal bonding with reduction in thickness 300-450 degrees C. Final oxidation is also at 800-850 degrees C for a time depending upon the thickness of the strip. The metal layer may be Ag, Cu, Al, or Au but is preferably Ag. The two-stage oxidation prevents the formation of a thick layer of CdO at the silver-CdO/Ag interface, with a resultant increase in mechanical strength, giving a product readily brazed or soldered to a support such as stainless steel. CdO composition in range 2-17 wt.%.
