Abstract

Gas generators, combustion chambers and especially rocket motors comprising a centrally perforated block of propergol require an initiator and primary charge to light the main charge. This is conveniently done by siting the initiator in the throat of the chamber and the primary charge in the cavity forward of the main charge. The flame from the initiator travels down the central perforation in the propergol block and ignites the primary charge which then ignites the main charge. The presence of the initiator in the throat of the chamber allows the initial generation of sufficient pressure to ensure the ignition of the propergol. The initiator container is then expelled by the internal pressure.
