1421049 Intermittent type combustion chambers GOSUDARSTVENNY NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY ENERGETICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI GM KRZHIZHANOVSKOGO 16 Oct 1973 48215/73 Heading F1L The invention relates to a method of intermittent detonation combustion of a fuel and oxidizer mixture in which the fuel and oxidizer are supplied separately into a combustion chamber there being means for forming a cushion of non-combustible gas between the hot residual combustion gases of the previous combustion phase and the incoming fuel and oxidizer, the cushion of gas being at a temperature below the ignition temperature of the fuel/oxidizer mixture. In Fig. 1 oxidizer is supplied from tank 4 through duct 2 into the combustion chamber 1 and fuel from tank 5 through duct 3; an igniter 6 is provided. The oxidizer and fuel ducts 2 and 3 have associated therewith heat exchangers 7. The arrangement is such that upon firing of the mixture the gases move towards the right to discharge through the open end of the combustion chamber and at the same time gases move to the left and enter the oxidizer and fuel ducts 2 and 3, these gases being cooled by means of the heat exchangers 7. The cooled gases are then forced back into the combustion chamber by the inflowing oxidiser and fuel, the cooled mass of combustion gas acting as a cushion or barrier between the residual hot combustion gases and the fresh oxidizer and fuel charge. A charge of inert gas such as nitrogen may be injected into the cooled gas cushion through injector 8; alternatively the charge of inert gas itself may constitute the cushion of non-combustible gas. In one embodiment the supply ducts 2 and 3 with the heat exchangers 7 are disposed within cooling water spaces.
