Abstract

A reaction motor for launching missiles, aircraft etc., which burns blocks of solid fuel employs a fuel extinction system, in which a set of ports each end of the combustion chamber is suddenly opened by an explosive cartridge on a cover over each port, so that pressure is released suddenly, and to prevent re-ignition of the solid fuel charges due to the heat of the vessel, a valve system is operated so that water is injected into the chamber by compressed air, to lower the temperature. Designs are given for a laboratory device and also for a test engine.
