Abstract

Unsubstd. aromatic hydrocarbons are produced by (a) hydrodealkylating a fresh feed contg. alkylaromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of a gas contg H2 is (b) recycling at least a part of the heavy polynuclear aromatic products obtained as by-products, and (c) contacting the recycled heavy products in a hydrodealkylating zone with >=20% pref. >=70% of the total hydrogen utilised before the mixture obtained contacts the major part of the fresh feed to be treated. Used for dealkylating toluene and xylene to benzene. Better utilisation is obtained of the polynuclear aromatic products so that higher yields of unsubstd. aromatic hydrocarbon is obtained. The temp of the process is controlled more accurately, and the energy consumption is decreased.
