1123030 Seats REINHARD HORNLEIN K G 12 Nov 1965 [14 Nov 1964 23 Dec 1964 28 Jan 1965 23 Mar 1965 24 Mar 1965] 48147/65 Index F2S 31 [Also in Division B8] A lifting unit, Fig.1, for adjusting the vertical height of a table for chair comprises a cylinder 1 with chambers 2, 3, 4. Chamber 2 contains gas under pressure and is bounded by a floating piston 7. Chambers 3 and 4 contain oil and are separated by a fixed wall 9. A guide 10 with a rod 11 is slidingly arranged in chamber 4. Connection between the chambers 3, 4 is through ports 12, 13 controlled by a slide valve 15 operated manually by a bar 21. In the position shown the chamber 3 is isolated from chamber 4 so that the unit is locked hydraulically. When the valve 15 is moved down so as to connect ports 12, 13 the gas in chamber 2 expands forcing the piston 7 down and transferring oil from chamber 3 to chamber 4, oil also passing from above the guide 10 to below it through a port 22, which may be a throttle port. So that chamber 4 can accommodate the additional oil the rod 11 is forced downwards. The guide 10 may have one or more one-way valves which permit rapid passage of oil during lowering. The chambers 2 and 3 may be separated by a solid or hollow ball 27, Fig.2 (not shown) of resilient material. As shown in Fig. 7 the chambers 2 and 3 may surround the chamber 4 as an outer cylinder. The chambers 2 and 3 may be larger in diameter than the chamber 4, Fig. 8 (not shown). Other types of valve may replace the slide valve 15 to control passage of oil from chamber 3 to chamber 4.
