921,696. Storing liquefied gases. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Oct. 9, 1961 [Oct.11, 1960], No. 36227/61. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXXIII]. A tank for storing liquefied gas at substantially atmospheric pressure comprises a roof 1 which is internally lined with a layer of porous material 14 e.g. sprayed foam plastic, or fibre glass attached to the roof by wire netting, and all the walls 11 and bottom of which are externally lined with layers 9, 10 of wooden planks as heat-insulating material. The layer of porous material may extend for a certain distance down the inside of the walls of the tank. When installed in a marine tanker the tank walls and bottom are of metal and the roof is formed by the deck of the tanker. A second heat-insulating layer 13 e.g. fibreglass may be provided on the outer surface of the planks 9, 10. The planks 9 are fitted between longitudinal members 8 attached to walls 6 and transverse bulkheads of the ship and the walls of the tank may be provided with semi-circular strip portions 12 to prevent direct mechanical contact between the members 8 and the tank. In operation, the porous material 14 fills with gas and the material provides adequate heat insulation.
