Abstract
Ion-exchange resins which are made by introducing ion-exchange groups into preformed organic polymer resins under nonaqueous conditions, are hydrated by bringing the ion-exchange resin into contact with a solution or dispersion of water in an inert organic solvent. The water may be added in the form of a spray to an agitated bath of the solvent in which the resin is suspended. The solvent may contain an emulsifying agent. The ion-exchange resin may be sulphonated or phosphonated cross-linked polystyrene, e.g. a copolymer of styrene and divinyl benzene, or a sulphonated cross-linked acrylate resin, e.g. a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and divinyl benzene. The organic solvent may be methyl n-butyl ketone, methyl iso-butyl ketone, isobutyl acetate, nitromethane, cyclohexanol, ethylene dichloride, methylene chloride, or tetrahydrofuran.
