Abstract

In the furnace of a recovery boiler, in which furnace vertical gas flows are suppressed and horizontal are reinforced by at least one approximately vertical row of gas jets 5 containing oxygen, performance is improved by distributing spent liquor, which functions as a fuel, at several levels. The combustion capacity is raised by supplying spent liquid 1a, 1b, 1c at more than one level in the lower part of the furnace above the coke bed 2. The content of nitrogen oxides is decreased by supplying a small quantity of spent liquor 6 to a zone which is at a temperature which is suitable for the purpose. A very small quantity of spent liquor 7 is spread at the top of the furnace in order to make the depositions on subsequent heating surfaces more porous and therefore easier to remove. <IMAGE>
