This invention relates generally to cooking utensils used for serving and storing food or the like. More specifically, the present invention relates to a container comprising a lid having at least one opening that can be adjusted to different open and closed positions by rotating the lid on the container.

Containers used for frying or other cooking purposes are conventionally provided with a lid so that the foodstuffs inside the container can be covered during cooking. Cooking food with the food covered helps keep heat and moisture inside the container and otherwise promotes cooking. Even when cooking with a lid is not desired, the lid can be used during serving to keep the contents of the dish warm. The term "vessel" is used in a general sense to mean an oven vessel such as a refractory casserole vessel suitable for use in an oven such as a microwave oven or a conventional oven. The term "utensil" may also be associated with a cooking utensil intended for use as a hot-cooked cooking utensil.

In some cooking applications, it would be useful to provide an otherwise closed container with an opening that would accurately allow controlled amounts of steam or other gas to escape. Furthermore, since it is desirable to keep the container covered during cooking, it is in any case desirable from time to time to allow access to the inside of the container during cooking. For example, it might be appropriate to place the thermometer inside the container without removing the lid completely. During serving, it would be appropriate to leave the serving spoon in the container and still keep the container covered.

In some prior art cookware, the entire lid or lid must be removed to access the container. This is awkward at best because the cook must either hold the removed lid with one hand or otherwise need to find a clean and heat-protected place where the hot lid can temporarily be on top. In addition, when the lid is removed from the top of the container, there is a risk that the cook may burn himself in the event of a sudden and uncontrolled steam escaping from the container.

The necessary opening for the discharge of steam from the container or for the placement of the thermometer can be provided by placing the lid in the slot on the container. This solution is cumbersome and usually difficult to adjust and thus undesirable. Other prior art vapor release opening means, usually limited to metal lids for sauce pans or the like, require a separate flap valve element that is releasably attachable to the lid. Such valves are not adjustable in different positions, and thus easily clogged and are relatively expensive, and above all cannot be easily installed in ceramic or glass cookware such as bowls. In other prior art containers, a valve arrangement is located in the container handle so that the release of steam can cause problems for the person handling the container. Positioning the valve in that way increases the chance that steam will condense on the handle, making it hot or slippery, or both.

The present invention overcomes the above and other problems of the prior art by implementing a container as defined in the following claims with an open mouth and a lid which can be placed on the container to close the open mouth. The lid and the container work together to form at least one opening of adjustable size 5,77970 that allows access to the container with the lid. The orifice can act as an adjustable valve, allowing controlled amounts of steam and water vapor to escape from the vessel. This opening is also large enough to insert a tool such as a cooking thermometer or spoon arm into the container.

On closer inspection, the outer strip of the cover includes an opening formed in it. The container includes an edge strip and a flange that surround the open mouth of the container. The parts of the edging act as a handle. Once the lid is in place on the container, it can be rotated to at least one angular position where the edge of the container closes the opening. The cover can be rotated to at least one other position by moving the handle, in which position the opening is open. This allows access to the inside of the container without removing the lid from the top of the container.

Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved cooking vessel.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a cooking vessel with a lid in which it is possible to enter the vessel without removing the lid.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a container and lid with an adjustable size opening inside the container that allows for controlled discharge.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a container and a lid with an adjustable opening inside the container, which opening is movable at different angles from the parts of the container which act as a handle.

Other advantages and objects of the present invention will become more apparent from the following description of the preferred apparatus.

Let us first consider Figures 1 and 2, which include a lid 11. The container and lid shown are intended for use, for example, as a refractory casserole container or for other cooking purposes. It is preferred that the container 10 and the lid 11 be made of a suitable material which can withstand both 5 77970 high temperatures during cooking in an oven or on a stove or when stored in a refrigerator or freezer.

The container 10, as best seen in Figures 2, 4 and 9, has a conventionally cup-shaped inner part 12 formed so that the side wall 13 protrudes from the bottom wall 14, which base is slightly convex in the middle of the container. The edge areas of the bottom wall 14 include a downwardly projecting protrusion 19 »which is generally circular in base plan view. The protrusion 19 is not continuous, but is preferably formed of a plurality of protruding parts. The protruding portions 19 serve as a base on which the cup rests when placed on a flat surface.

It can now be seen, with particular reference to Figure 8, that the opening 34 formed in the outermost strip 30 of the lid 11 allows access to the container 10 whenever the container 10 is covered so that the opening 34 is aligned with one of the corners 17 of the open mouth 15.

The opening 34 thus allows tools such as a cooking heat meter to be placed inside the container. The opening also acts as a valve, allowing steam to escape from inside the vessel. The open mouth portion 15 of the container 10 must be shaped so as to provide at least one position in which the angular position of the lid 11 on the container 10 allows the opening 34 to be closed. Since the preferred hardware solution has four angles 17, access to the container 10 is accomplished by rotating the lid up to 45 degrees in either direction.

By rotating the lid 11 relative to the container 10, the opening of the lid 34 can be moved from a position where it is located above the relatively narrow edge strip portion (24a) to a position above the relatively wide edge strip portion 24b. As best shown in Figure 3, in this position the opening is completely closed and no access is allowed inside the container. Thus, the relatively wide edge strip portion 24b provides a closure means which effectively prevents access to the container 10. The container 10 must include at least one relatively wide edge strip portion 24b so that at least one angular position 8 77970 of the lid 11 on the container 10 allows the opening to be kept closed.

Since the preferred embodiment has four relatively wide edge strip portions 24b », the opening 34 can be closed by rotating the cover no more than 45 degrees in either direction.

There are many benefits to this design. For example, the effective opening area of the opening 34 can be adjusted to any position between the maximum open and fully closed position by selecting the appropriate angular position of the lid 11 on the container 10. It should also be noted that in all angular positions of the lid 11 on the container 10, the outermost strip 30 is located on the edge strip 24. As previously mentioned, the relatively wide edge strip portions 24b thus act as handles. In the open position, the opening 34 is located in the angular position in which it is moved away from the relatively wide edge strip portion 24b. In this case, the release of steam from inside the container is not directed towards the user's hand when the container is gripped. In addition, it is less likely that steam will condense in the region of the skirting board 24b. The downward inclination of the edge strip 24 towards the open mouth 15 of the container also directs the condensed steam or other liquid towards the interior of the container.

It should be noted that the foregoing deals only with the preferred apparatus solution of the present invention, and that numerous variations and alternatives are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.

Claims (2)

A container, in particular for cooking food, and a suitable lid which closes the mouth of the container in a predetermined angular position and which in the second rotated angular position opens the passage to the interior of the container, the inner wall (13) of the container (10) (24) having at least one narrow edge strip portion (24a) and one wide edge strip portion (24b), and that the cover (11) has an opening (34) in one angular position of the cover (11) over the wide edge strip portion (24b), wherein the opening (34) is closed and which in the second angular position is on a narrow edge strip portion (24a) with access to the interior of the container (10), characterized in that the container (10) has a total of four alternately arranged symmetrical angular positions narrow and four wide edge strip portions (24a and 24b).
