Abstract

998,120. Strengthening edges. CLUETT, PEABODY & CO. Inc. Sept. 4, 1963 [Sept. 4, 1962], No. 34949/63. Heading B5K. The edge of a web is compressed inwardly upon itself and set in this position to improve the tearing resistance of the edge. As shown, a square sheet of non-woven fabric or paper 10 is laid on a bed plate 14 having a roughened raised bead 16 to engage the sheet 10 just inside its edges. Dies 18 operated by pneumatic piston-cylinder arrangements 19, are then moved inwardly and their undersides engage the top surface of the margins of the sheet and press it downwardly on to the roughened surface 17 to prevent inward movement of the sheet. Further inward movement of the dies compresses the edges of the sheet. If the fibres of the sheet are thermoplastic these are softened by steam from a duct 27 and by heaters 28 and the edge is thus set in its compressed state; otherwise layers of adhesive, e.g. of resin, are formed on each face of the edges of the sheet before compression and act in a similar manner. Tablecloths, napkins and handkerchiefs of non-woven fabric or paper may thus be made. Details are given of suitable mixtures of fibres.
