Abstract

A machine for forming glass articles such as bottles and the like which uses flows of cold pressurised coolant steam which are introduced into the mould cavities used to mould the glass articles is described. The cold cooling steam accelerates cooling and solidification of the articles in such a way that the time for which the articles have to be retained in their moulds is significantly reduced. The reduction in mould retention times make it possible for the machine to operate at increased speeds, as a result of which productivity increases significantly. Increases in productivity of 15% and sometimes more can be achieved at relatively low cost. Use of the introduction of cold coolant steam into the mould cavities is applicable to a variety of glass moulding techniques including pressure moulding and blow moulding.
