Abstract

For mfg. hosiery products, the socks or knee stockings are transferred mechanically from one machine stage to the next, so that all the operating stations are linked together. Pref. machinery is used to take the hosiery from the preceding stage, by drawing it from the needles, and/or opening pref. pneumatically, and/or spreading pref. mechanically with the use of a transfer former so that each item can be passed to a take-up former at the next stage. The hosiery item is extended, and/or inverted and/or drawn off by suction, or powered rollers which press the stocking fabric against the former surface for movement. The transfer, inversion and drawing off actions take place at the same time as the transfer former is passed over the length of the take-up former. The movement of the transfer former is round a closed curve or part of this curve round the axis of the take-up former, using a mechanical or hydraulic system. The steps are operated in cycles, as three stroke or four stroke, or a multiple of these.
