Abstract

Sealing surface of a rim opening of a glass container is treated with a precursor of tin oxide or titanium oxide to form a tin or titanium oxide coating on the surface. A chromium (III) organic metallic complex is then applied to the surface. - The sealing surface is designed to contain a thermoplastic membrane closure which is adhered to a metal face and held by a snap cap. The closure is heated by induction coils to seal to surface; the treatment improves the adhesion. In an example, glass jars were sealed with ethylene-methacrylic acid ionomer (cf. Der 35086 E/17). DEAB- DE3301500 C The openings of glass containers leaving a moulding machine are prepared for closing by a thermoplastic membrane by (A) coating the hot sealing surface of the openings with an Si and/or Ti oxide forming cpd. opt. together with an S oxide (precursor) and an F cpd. decomposing at the operating temp. of 430-650 deg.C, (B) annealing and cooling the containers and (C) applying an organo-Cr(3) complex to the cold surface of the container openings. - A Cr(3) complex of a 4-10C trans acid HOOC(R)C=C(R)COOH is pref. used, where each R is independently H, alkyl, -CH2COOH or Ph. The acid is esp. fumaric acid.
