Abstract
525,372. Coating surfaces. THOMASSEN, T. Feb. 20, 1939, No. 5589. Convention date, Aug. 27, 1938. [Class 95] [Also in Group XXII] Prior to a can end 1 being secured to a can body by rolling the edge of the can end about the edge of the body, the marginal flange or rim 2 is coated with enamel or varnish which is then heat treated so as to harden it superficially, the enamel below the surface remaining soft and viscous so that an hermetic seal is obtained. The enamel collects in the corners 6 and 7 in relatively thick layers as shown in Fig. 3. When the outer edge of the can end is given a preliminary inward bend 5, Fig. 5, the enamel may be applied over the entire surface of the can end which is then rapidly rotated to distribute the varnish as a thin protective coating over the major portion of the cover and as a relatively thick layer in the marginal rim where it is trapped by the portion 5. The subsequent heat treatment dries and hardens the thin protective coating but only superficially hardens the thick coating in the rim.
