Abstract

394,918. Glass manufacture; enamelling and glazing. HADDAN, R., 31, Bedford Street, Strand, London.-(Corning Glass Works ; Walnut Street, Corning, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4383. [Class 56.] A method of preventing dripping with glass or pottery vessels from which aqueous liquids are poured consists in coating the underside of the rim or a lip of a vessel with a transparent, fired-on film of a metallic compound which resists wetting by aqueous solutions. The method is particularly intended for the treatment of glass teapots, jugs, or other vessels, and a suitable material for the coating consists of titanium tetrachloride, silicon tetrachloride, tin chloride, or ferric chloride. In applying the coating to a glass vessel of the kind shown in the Figure, the vessel is heated at the neck and rim to a temperature of 300-400‹ C. It is then placed in a rotary chuck, and while it is rotating, the undersurface of the rolled-over rim 7 is subjected to a jet of fumes of titanium tetrachloride produced by passing dry air through liquid anhydrous titanium tetrachloride in a suitable container. Alternatively, a solution in water of the desired salt may be sprayed on to the vessel.
