Abstract

A metal rod is supplied to two joining rollers equipped with peripheral grooves (throats) which form a substantially circular roller passage, which also receives, via opposite sides of the rod, two metal strips made from a metal that is different from that of the rod. The rollers press the strips against the rod and draw the three together through the roller passage, with the strips curved around the rod in order to encase it. Before the strips reach the passage, an electrical current passes through a section of each one of them in order to heat it to a solid-phase joining temperature and to burn off contaminants. Also, before the rod reaches the rollers, it is heated to a solid-phase joining temperature by means of an electrical induction coil (spark coil) which surrounds it while it passes through an enclosure which is kept full of a gas which provides a controlled atmosphere around the heated portion of the rod. The diameter of the roller passage is sufficiently small to reduce the diameter of the product in it and, simultaneously, to produce the solid-phase union of the heated strips and of the heated rod with one another.
