Abstract

In a method for measuring the partial pressure of a gas in a medium that is not critical as to the selection of such medium, a load quantity is supplied to a material having a selectivity with respect to ions. The potential difference between the media is measured by means of shunting electrodes and the partial pressure is determined. The essential condition for this method is that the volume of one of the media is substantially smaller than the volume of the other one. A probe for implementing such method has a hollow body (25) with a chamber (27) preferably for a reference medium. The walls of the chambers separate the latter from the environment. There is provided in the wall a permeable area for the gas ions and an electrode is provided on each side of the area (29). The chamber (27) is completely separated from the environmental atmosphere. To control the temperature conditions in the ion selective area (25), there is provided a temperature measuring arrangement (21, 22) and/or heating or cooling members (14) on the probe.
