Abstract
1,243,705. Ionization chambers. KOMBINAT MESS-UND REGELUNGSTECHNIK DESSAU. 9 July, 1969, No. 34630/69. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G1] Components in air or other gas mixtures are quantitatively detected by preheating the gas mixture at 3, reacting it with a heated solid reagent 6 to produce an aerosol product, cooling the resulting mixture and detecting the aerosol by reduction in the ionization current in an ionization chamber 7. The gas mixture may be the effluent from a gas chromatograph and oxygen may be added to the gas mixture if needed. Components that can be detected, with suitable reagents, temperatures and aerosol products, are: HCN : ZnO at 300‹ C. forming Zn(CN) 2 . CH 3 CN : ZnO at 500‹ C. forming Zn(CN) 2 . H 2 S, mercaptane, or SO 2 : NiO at 900‹ C. forming NiSO 4 . AsH 3 : NiO at 600‹ C. forming Zn 3 AS 2 . PH 3 or phosphoric ester : ZnO at 600‹ C. forming Zn 3 P 2 . SbH 3 : ZnO at 600‹ C. forming Zn 3 Sb 2 . The ionization chamber is double walled, the inner wall 9 of aluminium serving as the anode and the outer wall 8 as a screen. The ionization source 11 may be a coating of 63 Ni, on the cathode, which may be brass, the # emission being expended entirely within the chamber.
