Abstract

Blood is withdrawn in a specific quantity via a blood extraction means (5-8) into a vessel (1,2) containing a blood culture system (10,11) under vacuum (12) or in an atmosphere of a suitable gas, the culture system comprising a liquid nutrient medium (11) and a solid nutrient medium (10), at least one of the nutrient media having associated with it at least one anti-bactericidal substance, at least one substance for preventing blood clotting and a pH dependent indicator system. The blood withdrawn into the vessel (1,2) becomes mixed with the medium (11) and at the same time inoculates the medium (10), then the vessel is incubated in a tilted position such that liquid medium 11 only partially covers solid medium 10 and the bacterial culture produced is detected by the indicator system.
