CONSISTE EN EL CULTIVO EN CONDICIONES AEROBIAS, DE DOS A SIETE DIAS, DE UNA CEPA STREPTOMYCES, A TEMPERATURA DE 25-30GC, EN UN MEDIO DE CULTIVO CONTENIENDO FUENTES DE CARBONO Y NITROGENO, HASTA PRODUCIR UNA CIERTA CANTIDAD DE ISTAMICINA. SE PASA EL PRODUCTO POR UNA COLUMNA DE UNA RESINA DE INTERCAMBIO CATIONICO Y SE RECUPERA LA ISTAMICINA EN FORMA CRUDA, EN SOLUCION O COMO SOLIDO. SE OBTIENE CUATRO CLASES DE ISTAMICINAS: A, B, A0 Y B0, SEGUN LA CEPA EMPLEADA, O BIEN UNA MEZCLA DE ELLAS. DE APLICACION EN INFECCIONES BACTERIANAS Y ESTERILIZACION DE MATERIAL QUIRURGICO.
