Process for the preparation of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid by oxidation of acrolein or methacrolein respectively, with molecular oxygen, in vapor phase, at a reaction temperature of from about 200ºC to about 500º c, in the presence of an oxide catalyst and, optionally, in the presence of water vapor, the improvement comprising using as a catalyst, a catalyst described by the formula xaybmo12pcasdox wherein x is a rare earth element or a mixture thereof; and it is at least one of silver, thallium, rhodium, palladium, ruthenium, platinum, cadmium, aluminum, gold, alkaline earth metal copper, chlorine and nh4; wherein a is from 0.001 to 10; b is from 0 to 10; a is from 0.001 to 5; d is from 0.001 to 5; x is the number of oxygens needed to satisfy the valence states of the other elements present.
