Abstract
An apparatus for compacting particulate metalliferous material, giving it a belt shape, comprising a pair of compaction rollers mounted with their geometric axes of rotation spaced apart in a substantially horizontal plane to define a rolling space therebetween, movable endless belts, positioned one at each end of the rolling space, in application with the end faces of the rollers to close the ends of the rolling space, and a hopper for feeding particulate material to the mounted rolling space with its discharge orifice positioned on the space of lamination and extending through substantially the entire length thereof, the apparatus being characterized by protective plate assemblies positioned one behind, or in front of, each side wall of the hopper, means for effecting relative movement between plate assemblies of protection and the side walls of the hopper, so the margin i the bottom of each protection plate assembly can project, at least partially, below the lower margin of the respective side wall of the hopper, to define the longitudinally extending limits of the discharge opening of the hopper and means for restricting the flow of particulate material towards the end areas of the rolling space, to counteract the tendency of the particulate material to be dragged to these end zones by the endless belts, to thereby maintain the rate at which the particulate material enters the space of lamination substantially constant over the entire length of this.
